On April 27, 2012 the Story Pirates performed at SRD. We have additional news regarding performances:
Even if a child's story wasn't performed on our own SRD stage, they have the opportunity to have their story performed live in NYC. Here is the information on how they can go about doing this (this information will also appear on the video we will have up for sale of today's performance).
The Story Pirates believe that every child has a story to tell. That's why they don't pick "winners" and "losers." Any child who submits a story can see it performed by the Story Pirates during one of their weekly Saturday matinees in Midtown, Manhattan at the Drama Book Shop. They debut several new stories in their show each week, though they are often booked several weeks or even months in advance, so submit your child's story today!
Stories can be any length and about any topic. They only have two rules with regard to new stories:
1) They must be entirely original (no stories about Star Wars or Hannah Montana).
2) Stories must be written entirely by kids. Adults should not co-write, edit, or even correct their children's stories. They should be submitted in the kid's own syntax, exactly as written or dictated to a adult.
Please be sure to include:
1) Your child's name
2) His or her grade level
3) The name of your child's school
4) Your name (or the name of the child's parents)
5) Contact information, including a home or cell phone number and email address
They may also be mailed to:

On Read Across America Day, March 2, 2012, the students at the Samuel R. Donald School were visited by author and illustrator, Mr. John Steven Gurney. Mr. Gurney has illustrated over 130 of America's most popular chapter books, including THE A to Z MYSTERIES, THE BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS, and the CALENDAR MYSTERIES. He is also the author and illustrator of the picture book DINOSAUR TRAIN. Mr. Gurney presented his information with clarity and humor, and showed a PowerPoint demonstrating the transition from beginning to the final copy of his work. He also shared the relationship between the illustrator, editor and author. The presentation concluded with Mr. Gurney guiding the children in independent "draw-along" activities. All SRD students were engaged and children walked away with knowledge and a self-made drawing.
SRD students also participated in anti- bullying activities, Donald Duos: Snuggle up with your Favorite Book, partner reading!
All children enjoyed the reading celebration!
After our school-wide Bucketfilling Assembly, children created Bucketfilling slips for SRD staff members! The initiative brings value and recognition to kindness and respect. This beautiful bulletin board can be viewed by all in our main hallway. Please, stop by and take a look!
